Son of a King

Son of a King

At the beginning of every great rug, there is the genesis of a story. Many rug salesmen will create a narrative behind a rug’s design, off the cuff, to increase the likeability of a carpet. Their stories might add some false worth to the eyes of an unwary consumer, but Alyshaan finds such flourishes to be unnecessary. Due to this, you would think that stories of: undefeated warriors, complicated battles, royal blood lines, powerful war horses and sincere nobility would not be found between the layers of our carpets. But that is where you would be wrong.

The family behind Alyshaan Fine Rugs are part of an ancient nobility that goes back to 300 B.C. called the Rajputs, which means “Son of a King.” They are known for their loyalty, independence, intensity, steadfastness, victories in battles and above all else, their commitment to that elusive and evaporating concept of honor. The leaders that carried Rajput blood were inexhaustible builders of beautiful things; fruitfulness, productivity and literacy abounded under their rule. They were also known to be fiercely proud, emphasizing tradition and always choosing death before dishonor. There are many stories passed down through the generations telling of Rajput warriors never giving up and fighting to the last man standing. Their patriotism and loyalty was and continues to be legendary.

Alyshaan often muses and contributes some of its success to our royal blood lines. Businessmen and warriors have some commonality; they must face tribulations and triumphs, they must lean on their experiences for knowledge to overcome obstacles and above all else they must be true to their core values. In business, as in battle, it takes strength, courage and steadfastness to be successful and Alyshaan has accomplished this even while our luxury market has been forced to reside in an essentials-only economy.

Like a fine rug, the creation of a great warrior takes time. Where we come from, the DNA or material that composes us and the people that touch us along the way all make an impact on the final result. It has always come naturally to Alyshaan to create an atmosphere of honor and truth in our showroom. When we are standing beside one of our rugs, their quality and beauty needs no false anecdote to embellish their worth, and they require no explanation. Not all story telling at Alyshaan is forbidden, we just insist our stories be true.

A Designer’s Perfect Match

Some sentimentalists say, “The best way to find your perfect match is to meet love halfway.” Interior designers are, in a way, matchmakers themselves. They give their clients’ knowledge, experience and expertise and then meet their clients’ visions, tastes and design needs in the middle to create something beautiful. We have enjoyed working with many talented designers over the years and have established a pattern of repeat business and a continuous working relationship with many of them.

Some of our designers have worked with us for a decade or more. Karen Ippolito, an interior designer in Scottsdale, Arizona has worked with Alyshaan for the past 10-years and she says, “The custom rugs at Alyshaan are one of the most amazing products. They offer beautifully-made custom rugs at prices that are half of other vendors in the
country… When my clients are happy I am happy.” Like Karen, we want our clients and designers to be happy and content with our services as well. That is why we customize our services and prices to make them more attractive to designers.

We keep all of our designers’ information: their business license, email and phone number etc. all carefully organized in our database. This allows us to quickly and easily access all of their pertinent information and also all their requests, including current and past clients. One example of a specialized designer service is our “virtual rug viewing.” This service allows the designer to grant their client a rug viewing even if they are out of the country. Our designers can provide their clients with photos of the rugs they have chosen together and place them virtually into their home. This can be very useful for large projects.

Suzanne Daley, Alyshaan’s marketing manager, also adds, “If they prefer for us to be educators with their client about rugs then we will be educators; if they prefer that they do the communicating with their client, we will remain in the background and provide only the services that they request.  Either way, we wish to serve in the best way possible.”

Alyshaan also hosts special events throughout the year that are just for designers. We recognize that our designers are a huge asset to our growth and continued success. We plan on persisting to learn more about our designers’ desires to increase the success of our internal relationships and also to offer all the support that we can in their ongoing relationships with their clients. If we had to pick one reason why a designer should choose to work with us it would be our service. Alyshaan has reliable and passionate services and we know how to tailor it for designers; some might even say that Alyshaan and designers were a match made in heaven.

Rugs that are Uniquely You

The desire to be unique and distinct is a universal human trait. It is how we market ourselves in interviews, our businesses in pitches and our offspring in conversations; and yet this desire and trait does come with some exceptions. Though we want to belong, we do not want to be part of the crowd; though we want to fit in, we still desire to stand out. Our mixed need for uniqueness and conformity is exactly like a single thread in a tapestry. The thread wants to be a part of something bigger, to help hold it all together, but it also wants to be colorful, vibrant and get noticed. Alyshaan’s Custom Rug Program offers you a way to be part of the fine rug movement and yet still stand out.

Alyshaan has Custom rug design software provided on their website, available for any client or designer who wants to start their own creation. Suzanne Daley, Alyshaan’s marketing manager, explains, “The beneficial side of custom is that there are virtually no limits to the design or size. There are plenty of colors to choose from and there are variables such as: material types, carving and pile height that can be modified.  Choosing a pre-programmed design and making it yours by dragging and dropping colors online is a treat for any designer or consumer.”

There are two different roads that you can travel down in your custom design journey. You can modify existing programmed rugs in their construction and color or you can work with Alyshaan’s graphic designers to create your own original design from scratch. Alyshaan also provides in-home consultations where we can bring in the wool and viscose poms physically to your home in order to help you determine your desired design and color. Daley explains, “What I love best about custom rugs is their ability to be a blank canvas.  Our tag line is Walk on Art, which means that the rug is a custom made piece of art.”

The quality of Alyshaan’s custom rugs, like all the rugs we offer, is always magnificent. You can choose among 60, 100 knot fine wool and/or silk rugs or hand tufted rugs. The length of time to create depends greatly on the size, the weave and the complexity of the rug’ design, but it is typically anywhere from 30 to 90 days. The process of the custom rug creation is interesting and exciting for you and for us at Alyshaan.

After the rug design is confirmed, we prepare the order for the weavers. You can choose to request a strikeoff, a 1.5-foot piece of the design, which you can preview to ensure that you like the colors and weave before the rug is completed. Once a strikeoff is approved, the weavers can get started.  During the process, the weaver sends progress photos of the rug in several different stages and Alyshaan provides these to you. Daley stated the best part of the process is, “Once we receive it, we call the customer and let them know their masterpiece is completed!”

One of the ways that the worlds of fashion, interior design and a vast variety of other industries enable themselves to offer unique products to their customers is through customization. Alyshaan is not lost on this point or to the desire for customization from our clients and designers; that is why we offer the Alyshaan Custom Rug Program so that you can choose a product that makes your home feel colorful and vibrant and gets your floor noticed. As we say at Alyshaan, “Your imagination is your only limitation.”

The Life of an Honest Salesman

Oscar Wilde once said, “The salesman knows nothing of what he is selling save that he is charging a great deal too much for it.” It was probably easy for Wilde to jot down that witty sentence with a flick of his vibrant pen; easy because decades did not allow him the pleasure of meeting Saeed Aslam. Saeed has stories and knowledge as rich as the beautiful carpets he sells. Alyshann means magnificent, beautiful, a quality to a royal degree, Saeed explained and not able to resist the playfully plug he added, “If you want to feel like royalty, buy a rug from us.” Sales did not always come so naturally to Saeed. He was only 19-years-old when he came to America in 1979 to study at a university. His family, though they had a thriving rug company started by Saeed’s father in Pakistan, could not send him any money because Pakistan’s government did not allow their money to be transferred into American currency. So his family sent him rugs instead. “I was a 19-year-old boy. I was more interested in girls and cars than rugs.” Saeed said. He admitted that, “In the beginning, I had no love or appreciation for them…but the more I learned about them the more I fell in love with them.” These rugs were Saeed’s ticket to success; his rent, lunch-money, tuition and survival resided in the brightly woven wool of these tapestries. He had to sell them and he eventually did. After he sold his first rug he remembers feeling, “So happy I couldn’t see straight.”

Due to his own study and through the help of different mentors, Saeed soon gleaned more and more knowledge. “The best thing I learned, I learned from people. It took many years just to get a basic handle on the rugs.” And yet Saeed muses, “After 32 years, I just know… how little I know.” As time has ticked on, Saeed has sold many, many rugs, met all types of people and tucked away dozens of stories. One of his favorite memories of a sale was regarding a Qum, Persian silk that cost $350,000. It was a very large rug; in fact at 11-feet by 22-feet it was too large for the second level of the great room that it was chosen for, by about a foot. The woman that was looking at it had fallen in love with the rug but Saeed hadn’t yet realized the depth of her affections. Saeed was in the process of having the rug rolled up and put away when the woman protested that she wanted it. Saeed gently explained to her that it wouldn’t fit, but to his surprise she declared, “No, I want the rug… I’ll bring the floor up.” She did indeed purchase the rug and proceeded to literally rebuild the room to fit around it. Another of his favorite stories involves a woman who came to him wanting to sell her rugs so that she could buy a used car. She explained to him that she had never placed her rugs on her floor, they had always been rolled up and put away because she had never owned a nice enough house to merit unrolling them. After viewing the rugs, Saeed realized that she was going to be able to buy a lot more than a very nice car; They were worth $140,000 at whole sale price. Saeed paid her the fair amount for the rugs and she was able to not only buy a car, but also her own land with a trailer on it. “She was the happiest woman in the world and I had some part in it.” Saeed contently explained.

Time has ticked by, Saeed has now been retired for a few years; handing the reins of the Scottsdale store to his son Sameer who decided, after 7-years of working with his father, to become the third generation of Aslams to be in the rug business. He is thrilled to be able to watch his son, exceeding the family standards and the mission of the store. When talking about Alyshaan’s customers Saeed said, “The biggest thing is that we want them to never feel pressured…You get a good value everyday of the week and there is a lot of integrity and honesty and common comfort.” Saeed says he has never forgotten some of the best advice that he received from his mentors, “To grow slowly, to take it easy don’t do too much too fast. There is a lot of misrepresentation in this industry but if you truly believe in yourself and the in the product, you don’t have to misrepresent it to sell it.” Saeed has resided in Arizona since 2001 and isn’t considering leaving any time soon. In his lifetime he has lived on 3 different continents: Europe, Asia and North America and he declared, “I love living in Arizona. I love living in this country…this is the best place on earth.” Though he has passed the baton on, Saeed still retains a presence at the rug shop surrounded by the rugs he loves, staying busy in his office with his work in a non-profit that he started. He said that he has everything he needs at Alyshaan, a tea room, his office and people he enjoys being around; he assures that he is usually nearby to help out on the floor if needed as well. “I am here. I am like an antique feature, like a grandfather clock.”

Trickery and Tapestries

We hate to be manipulated. It is one of the worse things that humans do to each other. It throws guards up, and does everlasting damage. The practice of manipulation breaks down our relationships, our communities and how we view our fellow man. It spreads a stench of distrust through the air and makes us gaze suspiciously at every kind act with the thought, “What do they really want?” There are not many occupations so coated and coupled with manipulation as that of a salesman. We tend to distain them; we don’t like to shop for cars or jewelry or at any business that works off commission. If we cannot avoid such an establishment we often bring friends along to protect us from the coming sales pitch, acting as if we’re actually afraid of perhaps crowding the plate too much and getting hit by it.

This salesman stereotype that exists in our minds makes the non-bargaining concept at Alyshaan all the more intriguing. In an industry speckled with grossly exaggerated sales and marked by constant haggling, Alyshaan promises a very different type of shopping experience; one where you will never feel pressured or get the feeling you are being mislead. Alyshaan’s previous owner, Sameer Aslam explains on their website, “We’ve tried interjecting a more honest and straight forward way of handling the rug business not commonly found in this industry.”

Like the unique area rugs they sell, another aspect of Alyshaan that sets it apart from the negative sales stereotype is the fact that they never even have a sale, their prices are their prices, fair and square no need to go up or down. When listening to the owners and the “salesmen” at Alyshaan it is gathered that part of the fuse that sparks this streak of honesty and comfort is the passion and love that they have for the industry and the trust that they have in their product. All of their rugs are handpicked by their staff who go directly to the country of origin to obtain carpets to replenish their stock of over 2,000 rugs.

Most individuals who are shopping for a special rug to add to the décor of their home, don’t really know what they are looking for and don’t have a ton of expertise in rugs, so right from the beginning there is a need for trust and a temptation to manipulate. Interested rug buyers need a trusty leader to help them discover the perfect tapestry for their taste and their home. Alyshaan promises to be just that.

Maybe that is what salespeople really should be, expert guides not manipulators, showing people the way through a product that they have developed a love for and an expertise in. Benjamin Franklin said, “Trickery and treachery are the practices of fools that have not the wits enough to be honest.” Fools and sales will not be found within the doors of Alyshaan or trickery and treachery for that matter just the promise to be different and quite often in our world, different can simply just mean honest and fair.

Learning About Fine Rugs

Image

Alyshaan enjoys the opportunity to educate our customers, designers and students on the benefits and value of fine rugs. In that learning process we discuss the types of rugs, weaves, materials used, types of dyes, making of rugs, finishing and also educate about our custom rug program. This type of education may sound dry, but is delivered with humor and enthusiasm. Please see our events section for the latest presentation.

Designer Secrets You Should Know

When designers are starting with a room where do they start first?

As one designer put it… “floor candy”, aka rugs :-)

Area rugs and wall art are important design elements as they create the foundation for the room.  One you have chosen these pieces all the other elements of your room can easily fall into place, such as drapery, upholstery, and wall color.

You’ll first need to decide the size that is right for the room.  Then you can determine how much you want your furniture to cover the rug.  Formal setting should have the furniture placed on the rug, whereas informal settings can have furniture partially on and off the rug.  Also, there’s a new trend of rug layering, which can add interest and whimsy to a room

Once you have found the perfect rug, you should take a good quality photo of it and carry it with you while you purchase all the other elements of the room.
