It seems that round area rugs are popular these days and yet difficult to find. Whether it is the size, color or style, the round rug is a different breed of rug. An oval rug is even more challenging to find; on average, round area rugs range in size from 2 feet round (which is very small) to 15 feet diameter. Traditional styles are seen most often in hand knotted round rugs because the demand is not as high as rectangular rugs or runners and the traditional style area rug is still a mainstay in the hand knotted rug world. But with the increasing demand of contemporary style rugs, there will be more contemporary round rugs available in time. The most common application of round rugs are under round tables; like in foyers, dining and breakfast rooms, and under coffee tables. But a wonderful use that is usually ignored is in areas that may not have a round table, or be round in shape themselves, but that are a circular area created by other furnishings and layout of the room. So you may have a rectangular or square room, let’s say a family room or great room, and you have rectangular couch and table in the seating area, but in front of the fire place, or behind the couch there is an area that is not round, but is perfect for a round rug because of its size configuration.
By nature of their circular shape, and the fact that hand-knotted rugs are made by tying knots in horizontal rows, round rugs are harder to make for weavers and the chance of a mistake is also much greater. The fringe on a round rug is mostly added after its woven for cosmetic reasons, and it can be removed easily if you don’t like a fringe on your rugs.
