Contemporary & Modern Rugs: More Information

A contemporary rug is a hand-knotted rug with a present-day design — abstract patterns, organic shapes, bold color fields, asymmetric compositions, painterly motifs. Where a Persian rug references designs perfected over centuries, a contemporary rug is current. The artist or designer drew it for today’s home, today’s color palette, today’s architecture.

What contemporary rugs share with Persian rugs is the construction. A fine contemporary rug is woven the same way a fine Persian rug is woven: knot by knot, by hand, on a vertical loom, using wool, silk, or a blend. The only difference is the design language. Hand-knotted construction matters because it determines whether your rug lasts 80 years or starts shedding in eight months.

In the rug world, the two terms are used almost interchangeably — but there is a real distinction worth understanding:

  • Modern typically refers to designs rooted in 20th-century modernist art and architecture. Think Bauhaus geometry, Mondrian color blocks, mid-century lines, Scandinavian minimalism. Modern rug designs were “new” 60 to 100 years ago, and they have aged into classics. A modern rug today usually means one drawing on this established visual language.
  • Contemporary refers to design that is current — of the moment. What is contemporary in 2026 is not what was contemporary in 2010. Today’s contemporary rugs lean toward painterly abstraction, tonal layering, organic shapes, and a softer color palette than the bolder modern work of the 2000s.

Most clients shop both categories at the same time, which is why we group them together. The right rug for your home might be a clean-lined modern piece or a softer contemporary one — and the best way to know is to see both on your floor.

Our hand-knotted contemporary and modern inventory includes:

  • Abstract painterly designs — Rugs that look like watercolor paintings underfoot, with soft transitions between color zones and no defined pattern. These have become the most-requested modern rugs of the past five years.
  • Minimalist solids & tonals — Single-color or two-tone rugs in fine wool or silk that act as a textural foundation rather than a focal point. Ideal for rooms where the architecture or other furnishings are the statement.
  • Geometric & mid-century modern — Hand-knotted reinterpretations of Bauhaus, mid-century, and modernist patterns. The construction is traditional; the design language is modernist.
  • Silk contemporary — Pure silk and high-silk-content rugs that change color and sheen as you walk around them. Used most often in formal living rooms, dining rooms, and primary bedrooms.
  • Designer collaborations & one-of-a-kind pieces — Individual hand-knotted artworks woven in limited runs or as single pieces. Each is signed and documented.

We source from master weavers in India, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan — the same weaving traditions that produce the world’s finest Persian and traditional rugs. The materials and craftsmanship are identical; only the designs are different.

Contemporary rugs are a natural fit for the architecture of greater Phoenix. Three reasons:

  1. Arizona is a modern-architecture state. From Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West to the mid-century ranch houses of central Phoenix to the new desert-modern builds throughout Paradise Valley and North Scottsdale, the region has always favored clean lines and modern form. Contemporary rugs are designed for these spaces.
  2. The light works. Arizona’s bright, even natural light is unforgiving — but it is exceptional for showing off subtle tonal variation, silk sheen, and the soft transitions of a painterly modern rug. These designs photograph and present better in Arizona than almost anywhere else.
  3. Indoor-outdoor flow needs an anchor. When sliding doors open and the great room flows into the patio, a single bold contemporary rug can hold the interior together visually. It is one of the most powerful design tools available for open-plan Arizona homes.

This is the section we wish every client read before buying a contemporary rug. The contemporary rug market is overwhelmingly dominated by hand-tufted products — yarn punched through a fabric backing with a tufting gun, then sealed in place with latex adhesive. These are sold at big-box retailers, online discount sites, and many local stores as “handmade.”

They are not handmade in any meaningful sense. They are factory products with toxic glue holding them together. In Arizona’s dry heat, the latex breaks down within a few years. The rug starts shedding. The glue releases volatile compounds — you can smell them on warm afternoons. The rug cannot be cleaned because the backing is glued, not woven. It cannot be repaired. It ends up in a landfill.

hand-knotted contemporary rug, by contrast, is constructed exactly like a Persian rug: each knot tied by hand around a foundation thread, no adhesive of any kind, the entire piece a single woven textile. It can be cleaned, repaired, restored, and passed down. It will outlast the design trend that inspired it.

Every contemporary and modern rug at Alyshaan is hand-knotted or handwoven. Every one carries our lifetime guarantee on materials and workmanship.

Our contemporary and modern inventory ranges from 2×3 feet to palace-size 20×35 masterpieces, with deep coverage of all standard sizes (3×5, 4×6, 5×8, 6×9, 8×10, 9×12, 10×14, 12×15) plus runners, rounds, and oversized squares.

Pricing ranges from approximately $200 to $200,000. Wool contemporary rugs in standard sizes typically run from $1,500 to $15,000. Silk and high-silk-content contemporary rugs run higher — silk is one of the most labor-intensive materials in fine rug weaving, and a 9×12 pure-silk rug can take a master weaver more than a year to complete. As direct importers, we offer the most competitive pricing on hand-knotted contemporary rugs in Arizona — and we never have sales.

Three generations of fine rug expertise

Our grandfather founded this business in 1969 as a manufacturer and exporter of fine rugs after a decorated military career. We have been in the United States since 1979 and in Scottsdale since 2001. We have watched the contemporary rug market grow from a small specialty into the largest segment of luxury rug sales — and we have the relationships with master weavers to source the best of it.

The largest in-stock contemporary collection in Arizona

When other rug stores claim “the largest selection,” they typically mean rugs they can order. We mean rugs you can walk on today. Our Scottsdale Design Center showroom holds the largest in-stock collection of hand-knotted contemporary and modern rugs in the state. Every piece is hand-picked. We never buy in bulk.

Free, no-obligation in-home showing

Contemporary rugs are particularly hard to choose from a screen or a showroom floor — color, scale, and texture all read differently in your actual space. Our background-checked staff will bring selected pieces to your home, lay them out, and leave them with you to live with as long as you need. No cost. No obligation. Furniture moving included.

Lifetime guarantee & written appraisal

Every contemporary rug we sell carries our lifetime guarantee on materials and workmanship, plus a written appraisal for insurance and estate purposes — at no additional charge.

Free delivery, premium pad, complete installation

Every purchase includes free delivery anywhere in the Phoenix metro area, a fine DuraHold pad cut to size by our showroom staff, and complete installation including moving furniture.

Most awarded rug store in Arizona

Alyshaan has been recognized multiple times by the American Society of Interior Designers as Industry Partner of the Year, honored with the Spirit of Enterprise Award and the SBA Small Business Success Award. We carry an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and hundreds of verified five-star reviews.

No sales. No gimmicks. Ever.

We are the only rug store in the country, to our knowledge, that has never had a sale and never will. We quote you our best price the first time. If you come back next year, the price will be the same.

Frequently Asked Questions

A contemporary rug is a hand-knotted area rug with a present-day design—abstract patterns, bold color fields, asymmetric compositions, or art-inspired motifs that have no direct connection to traditional weaving patterns. The construction, however, is the same as a Persian rug—knotted by hand on a loom using fine wool, silk, or both.

The terms are used almost interchangeably in the rug industry, but there is a subtle distinction. “Modern” often refers to designs rooted in 20th-century modernist art and architecture—Bauhaus, mid-century, geometric minimalism. “Contemporary” refers to current, of-the-moment design—which today includes abstract painterly motifs, organic shapes, and tonal layering. We use the terms together because the categories overlap heavily and most clients shop both at once.

The contemporary rugs at Alyshaan are all hand-knotted or handwoven from fine wool, silk, or a wool-silk blend. Most contemporary rugs sold elsewhere are not—they are hand-tufted with toxic latex backing that breaks down in Arizona’s dry climate. We do not sell hand-tufted rugs. Every rug we sell carries our lifetime guarantee on materials and workmanship.

Contemporary and modern hand-knotted rugs at Alyshaan range from approximately $200 for small accent pieces to $200,000 for oversized silk masterpieces. Most room-size contemporary rugs in our inventory fall between $1,800 and $20,000. Silk rugs and silk-blend pieces command the upper end because of the material cost and the labor required for fine-knot silk weaving.

Yes. Construction matters more than design when it comes to longevity. A hand-knotted contemporary rug woven from quality wool will last 60 to 100 years, just like a hand-knotted Persian rug. The design will date faster than the rug itself wears out—which is why we recommend hand-knotted construction even for clients who want a thoroughly modern look.

It depends on the rug. A bold, brightly colored modern rug typically does not work in a traditional home. But a quiet, tonal contemporary rug in soft neutrals can work in any setting—the same way a single piece of modern art can hang in an otherwise traditional space and elevate it. Our team has decades of experience helping clients pair contemporary rugs with traditional, transitional, and Southwestern interiors.

Wool is the workhorse—durable, naturally stain-resistant, and warm underfoot. Silk delivers the luminous sheen and color saturation that defines high-end contemporary design, but it is more delicate and best suited to lower-traffic areas like bedrooms and formal living rooms. Wool-silk blends combine the best of both: silk highlights provide sheen and depth, while a wool foundation provides durability. We carry all three at Alyshaan.
