A contemporary rug is a hand-knotted area rug with a present-day design—abstract patterns, bold color fields, asymmetric compositions, or art-inspired motifs that have no direct connection to traditional weaving patterns. The construction, however, is the same as a Persian rug—knotted by hand on a loom using fine wool, silk, or both.

The terms are used almost interchangeably in the rug industry, but there is a subtle distinction. “Modern” often refers to designs rooted in 20th-century modernist art and architecture—Bauhaus, mid-century, geometric minimalism. “Contemporary” refers to current, of-the-moment design—which today includes abstract painterly motifs, organic shapes, and tonal layering. We use the terms together because the categories overlap heavily and most clients shop both at once.

The contemporary rugs at Alyshaan are all hand-knotted or handwoven from fine wool, silk, or a wool-silk blend. Most contemporary rugs sold elsewhere are not—they are hand-tufted with toxic latex backing that breaks down in Arizona’s dry climate. We do not sell hand-tufted rugs. Every rug we sell carries our lifetime guarantee on materials and workmanship.

Contemporary and modern hand-knotted rugs at Alyshaan range from approximately $200 for small accent pieces to $200,000 for oversized silk masterpieces. Most room-size contemporary rugs in our inventory fall between $1,800 and $20,000. Silk rugs and silk-blend pieces command the upper end because of the material cost and the labor required for fine-knot silk weaving.

Yes. Construction matters more than design when it comes to longevity. A hand-knotted contemporary rug woven from quality wool will last 60 to 100 years, just like a hand-knotted Persian rug. The design will date faster than the rug itself wears out—which is why we recommend hand-knotted construction even for clients who want a thoroughly modern look.

It depends on the rug. A bold, brightly colored modern rug typically does not work in a traditional home. But a quiet, tonal contemporary rug in soft neutrals can work in any setting—the same way a single piece of modern art can hang in an otherwise traditional space and elevate it.
