We took our silk rug to Alyshan Fine Rugs in Scottsdale for professional cleaning and were met with incredible kindness and expertise. Samear not only ensured our rug was well cared for but also provided fascinating insights into its craftsmanship and how it was made and able to explain some of the emblems sewn on it. His honesty was refreshing—He estimated its true value realistically, confirming that we purchased a high quality rug overseas. Highly recommend Alyshan Fine Rugs for their integrity, knowledge, and top-tier service!

A Persian rug is a hand-knotted area rug woven in Iran — the country known as Persia until 1935 — using techniques refined over more than 2,500 years. Each rug is built knot-by-knot by hand on a vertical loom, with weavers tying individual wool or silk strands around foundation threads to form the pile. A single 9×12 Persian rug can contain over a million knots and represent a year or more of skilled labor by master artisans.
What separates Persian rugs from everything else on the market is the combination of regional identity, natural materials, and generational craftsmanship. Each weaving city or village in Iran developed its own design language over centuries — and an experienced eye can identify a rug’s origin from the pattern alone. The most celebrated Persian weaving regions include:
Mahal & Sultanabad — Larger-scale all-over designs with soft, naturally dyed palettes. Mahal rugs are among the most decorator-friendly Persian rugs because their open, flowing patterns suit both traditional and transitional interiors.
“Traditional” is a broader category than Persian. It encompasses any hand-knotted rug woven in the classical design tradition — formal medallions, floral motifs, intricate borders, and the rich palettes of reds, golds, ivories, and blues that have defined fine area rugs for centuries. Persian rugs are traditional rugs, but the traditional category also includes hand-knotted pieces from Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, and Turkey.
At Alyshaan Fine Rugs, our traditional collection includes:
Every traditional rug in our inventory is hand-knotted or handwoven — never machine-made, never hand-tufted with toxic latex backing.
One of the most common misconceptions we hear in our Scottsdale showroom is that traditional rugs only belong in traditional homes. That hasn’t been true for over a decade. Some of the most striking interiors in Paradise Valley, North Scottsdale, and the Biltmore corridor pair a single Persian rug with otherwise modern furniture — the contrast is exactly what makes the room.
Persian and traditional rugs work particularly well in Arizona for three reasons:
They anchor open floor plans. Most Arizona homes have large great rooms with vaulted ceilings. A 10×14 or 12×15 traditional rug visually grounds these spaces in a way smaller rugs cannot.
This is the most important section on this page. The rug industry uses the word “handmade” to describe everything from genuine hand-knotted heirlooms to mass-produced hand-tufted rugs glued together with latex. They are not the same product. They are not even in the same category.
Hand-knotted rugs — the kind we sell — are constructed by tying each knot of wool or silk by hand around a foundation thread. There is no glue, no backing, no adhesive of any kind. The rug is a single woven textile that can last 80 to 100 years or more with proper care.
Hand-tufted rugs — which most rug stores sell as “handmade” — are made by punching yarn through a fabric backing using a tufting gun, then gluing a second layer of fabric to the back with latex adhesive. In Arizona’s dry climate, that latex breaks down quickly, releasing toxic compounds into the air and causing the rug to shed and fall apart within a few years. We do not sell hand-tufted rugs. We never have.
Every Persian and traditional rug at Alyshaan is hand-knotted or handwoven from fine wool, silk, or a wool-silk blend. That’s why we can offer a lifetime guarantee on materials and workmanship on every rug we sell — a guarantee that is the envy of our industry.
Persian and traditional rugs at Alyshaan range from 2×3 feet to 20×35 feet — and everything in between, including runners, rounds, oversized squares, and palace-size pieces. We stock standard sizes (3×5, 4×6, 5×8, 6×9, 8×10, 9×12, 10×14, 12×15) along with hundreds of in-between and oversized pieces.
Pricing ranges from approximately $200 for small accent rugs to $200,000 for museum-quality masterpieces. The majority of our Persian and traditional inventory falls between $1,500 and $25,000 for room-size rugs. As direct importers with relationships built over three generations, we offer the most competitive pricing on fine hand-knotted rugs in Arizona — every single day. We have never had a sale, and we never will. The “50% off” sales used by other rug stores have become an industry joke. We quote you our best price the first time. If you come back next year, the price will be the same.
Three generations, since 1969
Our grandfather founded this business in 1969 as a manufacturer and exporter of fine rugs and décor after a decorated military career as a Second World War officer. We have been in the United States since 1979 and in Scottsdale since 2001. Persian rug knowledge cannot be acquired in a year, or even a decade. It is passed from one generation to the next — and we are the third.
The largest in-stock inventory in Arizona
Many rug stores claim “the largest selection.” When you visit, you discover they mean rugs they can order. We mean rugs you can walk on today, in our Scottsdale Design Center showroom. We hand-pick every piece in our inventory — we never buy in bulk — and we carry more in-stock Persian and traditional rugs than any other showroom in the state.
Free, no-obligation in-home showing
Picking the right rug from a showroom floor is hard. Picking it under your own light, next to your own furniture, on your own floor, is easy. Our background-checked staff will bring selected pieces to your home, lay them out, and leave them with you to live with for as long as you need. No cost. No obligation. Furniture moving included.
Lifetime guarantee & written appraisal
Every rug we sell carries our lifetime guarantee on materials and workmanship. We also provide a written appraisal for insurance and estate purposes at no additional charge — the same document many of our clients use to insure their rugs through their homeowner’s policy.
Free delivery, pad, and installation
Every rug purchase includes free delivery anywhere in the Phoenix metro area, a fine DuraHold pad cut to size by our showroom staff, and complete installation including moving furniture. Our delivery team is background-checked, courteous, and trained to handle fine rugs.
Award-winning, A+ BBB, hundreds of five-star reviews
Alyshaan is by far the most award-winning rug store in Arizona, recognized multiple times by the American Society of Interior Designers as Industry Partner of the Year, honored with the Spirit of Enterprise Award, and the SBA Small Business Success Award. We carry an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau and hundreds of five-star reviews — every single one from a verified, satisfied client.
No sales. No gimmicks. Ever.
We are the only rug store in the country, to our knowledge, that has never had a sale and never will. We respect our clients too much to insult their intelligence with phantom markdowns.
A true Persian rug is hand-knotted in Iran (formerly Persia) using techniques passed down through generations. Each rug is tied knot-by-knot on a loom using wool, silk, or a combination, and the design reflects the specific weaving region — Tabriz, Heriz, Kashan, Isfahan, Nain, Bidjar, and others all have distinct identities. Machine-made or hand-tufted rugs with Persian-style patterns are not Persian rugs.
All Persian rugs are traditional, but not all traditional rugs are Persian. Persian refers specifically to rugs woven in Iran. Traditional is a broader design category that includes Persian rugs as well as classical designs woven in Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, and Turkey — such as Indo-Mahal, Pak-Kazak, Indo-Mamluk, and Indo-Tabriz. At Alyshaan, we carry hand-knotted traditional rugs from all five major weaving countries.
Our Persian and traditional hand-knotted rugs range from approximately $200 for small 2×3 entry pieces to $200,000 for palace-size masterpieces up to 20×35 feet. Pricing depends on origin, knot count, materials (wool, silk, or blend), age, and size. As direct importers, we offer the most competitive pricing on fine hand-knotted rugs in Arizona — every day, with no sales or markdowns.
Quality hand-knotted Persian rugs have historically held or appreciated in value, particularly antique and semi-antique pieces from sought-after weaving regions. Unlike furniture, a well-made Persian rug can last over a century with proper care and often becomes a family heirloom. We provide written appraisals for insurance and estate purposes on every rug we sell.
Absolutely. Traditional and Persian rugs pair beautifully with desert-modern, Southwestern, and contemporary Arizona interiors. The earthy reds, golds, ivories, and blues found in Persian designs complement the natural tones of Arizona architecture. Many of our clients use a single Persian rug as the anchor piece in an otherwise modern room — it adds soul without competing with clean lines.
Turn the rug over. A hand-knotted rug shows the design clearly on the back, with visible individual knots. A hand-tufted rug has a fabric or latex backing glued on, hiding the construction. Hand-tufted rugs use toxic latex adhesive that breaks down — especially fast in Arizona’s dry heat — releasing chemicals into your home. Every rug at Alyshaan is hand-knotted or handwoven. We do not sell hand-tufted rugs.
Yes. Alyshaan offers free, no-obligation in-home showings throughout the Phoenix metro area. Our background-checked staff will bring rugs to your home, lay them out in your space, and leave them with you to live with before you decide. There is no charge and no pressure.
