Why Hand-Knotted Rugs Can Be Saved

A hand-knotted rug is made the same way it has been made for thousands of years: one knot at a time, by hand, around foundation threads, with no adhesive of any kind holding it together. That construction is the reason a damaged hand-knotted rug can almost always be repaired. The rug can be unknotted at the damaged area and re-knotted by a skilled master weaver—using matching wool or silk, matching the original knot density, matching the original colors after dyeing—until the repair is invisible.

This is also why hand-tufted rugs cannot be properly repaired. The glue cannot be reversed. The damage cannot be unknotted because there are no knots. We see clients arrive with hand-tufted rugs they were told are “Persian” or “Oriental,” and the difficult conversation is explaining that the rug they thought was an heirloom is a glued-together product that cannot be saved. Every rug we sell is hand-knotted, in part so we can guarantee it can be repaired indefinitely.

Rug restoration is one of the most specialized crafts in the textile world. A master weaver must understand hundreds of knot patterns and design conventions from different regional traditions, be able to match aged wool and silk to original materials (and dye them to match the original colors), reweave seamlessly into existing pattern without disrupting the design, and rebuild structural elements like foundation, edges, and fringe to original specification.

This is not work that can be learned in a year. It is a lifetime’s craft. Our in-house master weaver has over 40 years of experience in fine rug repair and restoration. The number of weavers operating at this level anywhere in the United States is small. The number doing this work in Arizona, in-house at a single facility, is far smaller. Every repair our facility performs is done on-site, by hand, by him. We do not outsource. We do not ship rugs to subcontractors.

Repair & Restoration Services We Perform

Reweaving — Worn areas, holes, tears, moth-damaged spots, and pet-damaged sections are rewoven knot-by-knot using matching wool or silk dyed to match the original colors. Done correctly, a rewoven area is invisible from above.
Fringe Repair & Replacement — Fringe damage is the most common rug repair we perform. We repair frayed fringe, replace missing fringe, and overcast damaged edges to prevent further unraveling.
Edge Repair & Overcasting — Damaged selvages are repaired or rebuilt to original specification, preventing the rug from unraveling and restoring the original clean appearance of the edges.
Resizing — Rugs can be made smaller to fit specific spaces. Proper resizing requires removing the original edges, carefully separating the rug to the correct dimensions, then rebuilding the edges and fringe to match the original construction.
Color Restoration — Sun-faded, water-damaged, or chemically-damaged colors can in many cases be restored. Our master weaver has decades of experience with natural and synthetic dyes from every major weaving tradition.
Antique & Semi-Antique Restoration — We have extensive experience restoring antique Persian, Caucasian, Turkish, and Central Asian rugs to display, use, or sale-ready condition.
Foundation Repair — When warp and weft damage compromises a rug’s structural integrity, we rebuild the foundation before the visible pile is rewoven. This is the most complex type of repair we perform.
Pet Damage Restoration — Where dye and foundation have been destroyed by pet urine, we reweave the affected areas after the rug has been thoroughly cleaned and neutralized.

How to Get Started

Bring the rug to our showroom, or schedule a pickup. For rugs in the Phoenix metro area, our background-checked delivery team can pick up the rug at your home (a nominal fee applies).
Inspection & quote. Our master weaver inspects the rug, identifies the work needed, and quotes the repair clearly and completely. There are no surprises and no hidden costs.
Approval & production. Once you approve the quote, work begins. Timelines vary based on the complexity of the repair—simple fringe work may take 1 to 2 weeks; major reweaving on a large antique can take 6 to 12 weeks or more.
Final inspection & return. Every completed repair is reviewed by a senior member of our team before the rug leaves our facility. We return the rug to you in person, or schedule delivery throughout the Phoenix metro.

Can my damaged Persian or hand-knotted rug really be repaired?

In almost every case, yes. Hand-knotted rugs are made knot by knot, which means they can be repaired the same way. A skilled master weaver can rebuild missing areas, replace damaged fringe, restore worn edges, fix tears and holes, and even rebuild structural foundation damage. The only repairs that cannot be made are on rugs that are not actually hand-knotted; hand-tufted rugs cannot be properly repaired because their construction is glued, not woven.

What kinds of rug damage do you repair?

Yes—and resizing a fine rug is much more involved than simply cutting it down. Done correctly, resizing requires removing the original edges, carefully separating the rug to the correct dimensions, then rebuilding the edges and fringe to match the original construction. Done incorrectly, the rug unravels. Our master weaver has resized hundreds of fine rugs over the years and the work is undetectable from the original.

How much does rug repair cost?

Repair pricing varies enormously depending on the type and extent of damage. A simple fringe repair on a small rug may be a few hundred dollars; reweaving a missing area on a large antique can run into the thousands. Every repair is quoted individually based on the rug, the damage, the materials needed, and the labor required. We will always provide a clear quote before any work begins. There are no surprises.

A family heirloom with sentimental significance is almost always worth repairing. A modest production rug with extensive damage may not be. We will give you an honest assessment when you bring the rug in—including telling you when repair is not the right answer.
