Plastic wrapping is acceptable for short-term storage of up to a few months. For extended storage, however, keep in mind that rugs are made from natural fibers that require airflow to remain in good condition.
Elevation: Store the rug off the ground using pallets, cinder blocks, a table, or a similar platform. This protects against moisture seeping up from the floor as well as insect activity.
Covering: Rather than sealing the rug in plastic, loosely drape it with a breathable fabric such as cotton muslin. This allows air circulation while keeping dust and debris away.

Rolling: Always roll the rug starting from the fringe end, and avoid folding it at any point, as folds can cause permanent creasing or fiber damage.

Pest Prevention: Place mothballs or cedar balls near the stored rug to deter moths and other insects.
Periodic Airing: Every few months, unroll the rug, allow it to air out, and re-roll it. This prevents fiber compression, moisture buildup, and pest activity from going undetected.
